Required Auto Insurance in Kansas

One aspect that does separate Kansas from much of the rest of the nation is the substantial level of coverage that the state requires all drivers to maintain. First, drivers must carry liability insurance with minimum levels of coverage in order to protect other drivers should an accident occur. Also, state law says that everyone must also have motorist coverage which pays for medical bills and property damage if you are victimized in a collision with a driver that doesn't have any liability insurance (or is underinsured). Finally, all Kansas auto insurance policies must contain personal injury protection, which acts as the primary source of insurance for anyone who is hurt in an auto accident.

State Minimum Liability Coverage in Kansas:

  • BI or Bodily Injury: $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident
  • PD or Property Damage: $10,000 per accident

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) in Kansas:

  • Medical costs: $4,500 per person
  • Disability and loss of income protection: $900 per month for a year
  • In-home services: $25 per day
  • Rehabilitation expenses: $4,500
  • Funeral expenses: $2,000

State Minimum Uninsured Motorist Coverage in Kansas:

  • $25,000 per person, per accident for bodily injury.
  • $50,000 per accident for bodily injury.

Optional Coverage in Kansas to Consider

It may seem hard to believe, but the aforementioned insurance policies may not protect you from every possible mishap that can befall your vehicle. With this in mind, it might be wise to explore some of the optional coverage that is available for Kansas drivers. These additional policies will serve to provide another layer of financial protection for you and your family.

Below are some examples you may want to consider:

  • Collision Coverage: Liability insurance addresses the damage to other vehicles involved in an accident - but what about the damage to your vehicle? Collision insurance will handle the repair costs for your vehicle (minus a deductible) so you can get it up and running again in a reasonable amount of time. This policy will also pay to repair damage sustained in a single-vehicle crash.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: What happens if a tornado knocks a tree onto your vehicle? Or a severe thunderstorm floods your vehicle's interior. Or if an unscrupulous individual vandalizes, burns, or steals your car? Comprehensive insurance is designed to protect you against monetary losses sustained by a non-crash related calamity.
  • Higher Bodily Injury Limits: Given the high costs of health care these days, it often takes one serious injury (or even multiple minor injuries) to run up medical bills exceeding $50,000, which is the state-mandated minimum for liability insurance bodily injury coverage. Therefore, it might be prudent to look into raising those limits to $100,000, $250,000, or higher - so you don't have to pay out-of-pocket costs that arise from a serious injury collision.
  • Higher Property Damage Limits: Similarly, $10,000 might not always be enough to repair the damage you cause in a multi-vehicle collision or if you strike an expensive vehicle. Many drivers choose to purchase liability policies with higher levels of property damage coverage, such as $25,000, $50,000, or more.

Unlike liability, PIP, or uninsured/underinsured coverage, these policies are totally optional. But many people find them to be quite beneficial in protecting their assets. If you think you might be one of these people, an AIS agent would be eager to give you more information on obtaining one or more of these policies.

Kansas is a No-Fault State

The Sunflower State is also one of the few in the nation with what is referred to as a "no-fault" insurance system. "No-fault" simply means that regardless of the circumstances surrounding an auto accident, all parties who are injured will first turn to their own personal injury protection policies for reimbursement of their medical expenses. This does not imply that fault and responsibility are completely irrelevant in an accident. But the state's no-fault system is designed to minimize the number of auto accident cases which wind up becoming lengthy lawsuits and court trials. A qualified AIS agent can help you with any questions you might have about Kansas' "no-fault" status.
