Minnesota Auto Insurance

Minnesotans are proud of their state having more than 11,000 lakes and more than 90,000 miles of shoreline. They boast 19 Fortune 500 companies in the state, so you’re bound to find employment. Minnesotans also don’t have to worry about the awful rush hour traffic that you can find in major U.S. cities like Los Angeles. However, commuting to work every day can still bring about disastrous events that happen on the road no matter where you are. This is why Minnesota legally requires drivers to maintain Car Insurance.

Auto Insurance rates in Minnesota can vary more than you might think from one insurance company to another. That’s where Auto Insurance Specialists can help!

Try our simple form for an AIS Instant Quote®. This quote will be a range of our Auto Insurance partners' rates for the coverage you select. You can even pick the price you like, too.

Required Auto Insurance in Minnesota

The state of Minnesota requires all drivers to have Car Insurance with the following coverages: Liability Insurance that includes Bodily Injury and Property Damage, Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage. These minimum requirements are in place to ensure that you are protected financially in case of a car accident that causes injury or property damage to you or another involved party. Your PIP Insurance will cover you if you are in someone else’s car. Passengers in your car will be covered by their own PIP Insurance if they have it. Your Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage will cover you in the event that your medical costs are in excess of what your PIP covers and the driver at fault does not have the proper Auto Insurance coverage.

Optional Coverage in Minnesota

The state requirements are the minimum Auto Insurance that you’re legally required to maintain, but you also have the option to add on other coverages or increase the limits of your standard insurance policy. Most people will add some or all of these coverages because they find that the state required minimums are not enough to cover most accident expenses.

The following are some of the additional coverages that you may want to consider adding onto your Minnesota Auto Insurance policy:

  • Collision Coverage*: This coverage will assist in paying for damages to your car that result from an accident or collision with another vehicle or object.
  • Comprehensive Coverage*: This coverage will help pay for damages to your car that result from causes other than accidents or collisions.
  • Rental: When your car is getting repaired, due to an accident or covered cause, this will pay for your car rental expenses, up to policy limits.
  • Roadside Assistance: This reimburses you for roadside assistance expenses.

*Although Collision coverage and Comprehensive coverage are not required by law, they may be required in your car loan or lease contract with the lender.

You are under no obligation to purchase any of these optional Auto Insurance policies. But if you think that they may be right for you, feel free to call us at Auto Insurance Specialists to see about getting additional coverage.

Minnesota is a No-Fault State

Minnesota is one of the few states that are considered “no fault” states. This means that drivers or passengers injured in an auto accident turn to their own insurance companies for their own damages regardless of fault, up to policy limits. However, this also means that you give up some of your rights to sue for damages, pain and suffering, and other such factors.

The reason behind this law is to help make insurance claims more efficient and to reduce the number of car accidents cases and lawsuits that go through the courts. Every no-fault state has different Auto Insurance laws, so speak with one of our licensed Insurance Specialists for more information.
