Required Auto Insurance in New Mexico

Every state has different requirements for Auto Insurance, so it is important to know how much coverage you need to legally drive on the road. New Mexico uses an electronic database to monitor the Car Insurance status of all vehicles registered in the state. If you don’t meet the required coverage, they’ll send you a letter to make sure you get your Car Insurance updated. To meet the state’s Auto Insurance requirements, you must have Liability Insurance. This type of coverage pays for the damages involved in an accident in which you were at fault. It excludes your own vehicle and damage, so you may consider adding optional coverages to your policy for further financial protection.

State Minimum Liability Coverage in New Mexico

  • BI or Bodily Injury: $25,000 per person; $50,000 for injuries to multiple people in an accident
  • PD or Property Damage: $10,000 per accident

Optional Coverage in New Mexico

Meeting the minimum required New Mexico Auto Insurance coverage may allow you to drive legally, but it’s not always enough coverage to pay for the costs that may incur from an accident. By adding extra coverages, you’re also providing yourself with the extra peace of mind that you’ll be safe from unknown events that can happen on the road.

The following coverages can be added to your Auto Insurance policy to give you fuller protection:

  • Collision Coverage*: This type of coverage pays for costs related to damages to your car from an auto accident. The average national repair costs after an accident are $3,000, so it’s worth it to consider adding this optional coverage to your Auto Insurance policy.
  • Comprehensive Coverage*: This type of coverage will pay for the damages to your own car that resulted from something other than collision. This may include vandalism, fire, flood and more.
  • Medical Payments: This coverage will pay for your medical expenses if you are injured in an accident, up to policy limits.
  • Towing and Labor: This coverage reimburses you in the case your car needs towing.

*Although Collision coverage and Comprehensive coverage are not required by law, they may be required in your car loan or lease contract with the lender.

Although you aren’t legally required to carry these levels and types of coverage in New Mexico, AIS highly recommends that you consider them for your policy. One of the best ways to determine your specific Auto Insurance coverage needs is to call one of our licensed, knowledgeable agents.
