Required Auto Insurance Coverage in Pennsylvania

Without auto insurance, an accident could be detrimental to a person’s financial situation. But it is also against the law to drive in Pennsylvania without insurance. It is required that a Pennsylvania driver must have liability insurance and personal injury protection. Liability insurance covers the other people and property involved in an accident (up to your policy’s limits). Keep in mind, that you could be required to cover medical bills, lost wages, property damages, pain and suffering, car rental, and more (there are conditions for this policy, however.

Read the section below regarding “no-fault” states, or call an AIS licensed insurance specialist for further clarification). Personal injury protection would cover injuries that you may sustain in a car accident—regardless of who is at fault. It is required that Pennsylvania drivers have these types of insurance, but they also must carry minimums of each kind on their policies.

State Minimum Coverage in Pennsylvania:

  • BI or Bodily Injury Liability: $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident
  • PD or Property Damage Liability: $5,000 per accident
  • PIP or Personal Injury Protection: $5,000 per accident

Optional Coverage in Pennsylvania to Consider

Though one may think that the state-required minimum insurance coverage would be sufficient… many times, it isn’t. We would recommend that you consider additional coverage options, as well as higher policy limits, as doing so could better protect you, your finances, and your family.

Below are some examples you may want to consider:

  • Underinsured or Uninsured Motorist Coverage - Unfortunately, even though it is required by law to purchase auto insurance, people will still choose to drive without it. Though Pennsylvania has one of the lowest uninsured driver estimates, finding yourself in a collision with an uninsured motorist is still a fair concern.
  • Collision Coverage - Following an accident, this insurance would help pay for damages to your own car. Vehicle repairs in general are costly, but the national average repair costs after an accident is close to $3,000! Without collision coverage, an accident could put quite a toll on your financial situation for those necessary car repairs.
  • Comprehensive Coverage - Storms, tornadoes, flooding and other weather extremes are very real concerns for those who live in Pennsylvania. A natural disaster could be potentially catastrophic for your car – and your wallet. With comprehensive coverage, you should be covered, up to your policy’s limits, for non-collision-related vehicle damage.
  • Higher Bodily Injury Limits - Medical bills are unquestionably expensive, especially for those involved in collisions. You may be held responsible for the incurred medical expenses of those hurt in the accident. Because these costs can be significant, you may want additional BI coverage.
  • Higher Property Damage Limits - $5,000 is the minimum PD coverage that you must carry in Pennsylvania, but that amount is fairly small. Consider this: on top of vehicle repairs, you may need to pay for damage to other property such as light poles, fences, and buildings. This being the case, $5,000 may not stretch far enough. We would recommend that you increase your policy limit to better protect yourself.

Many times, the minimum state-mandated insurance requirements are simply not enough to protect you from a disastrous situation. Auto Insurance Specialists could help you determine your specific auto insurance coverage needs.

Pennsylvania is a Choice No-Fault State

Pennsylvania is one of the few states that adopt a “no-fault” system – however, you could decide against it. For those who choose a no-fault system, each person involved in a collision would turn to his own insurance company for compensation for injuries and damages. In addition, each individual would give up some litigation rights. For individuals who don’t want a “no-fault” policy, fault will need to be determined, and that insurance company would be responsible.

If the difference between these two systems is still a bit fuzzy, call a licensed AIS specialist to get your questions answered, and find the right policy for you.
