And though the Lone Star State is a sunny one, it is also home to flash floods and hurricanes from the Gulf of Mexico. The result of inclement weather can have a drastic effect on both road conditions and vehicles. That is why the state of Texas has Auto Insurance requirements in place to protect you.

Required Auto Insurance in Texas

Texas drivers are required by law to have Liability Insurance. This form of coverage pays for damages (up to the policy’s limit) in the event that you are found to be at fault in an accident. It excludes damages to your own car, however. In an accident where you are found to be at fault, you may be required to pay for property damages, lost wages, pain and suffering compensation, car rental, medical bills and more –  and Liability Insurance would cover much of it. Liability Insurance would also cover your lawyer fees should you be sued for the accident. Personal Injury Protection coverage is also available to you and will be automatically offered to you by insurance companies. Reference the Optional Coverage in Texas section below for more information, or call an AIS Insurance Specialist today.

State Minimum Liability Coverage in Texas

Optional Coverage in Texas

In Texas, as noted above, Liability Insurance is the minimum requirement. However, there are additional coverage options that you may want to consider, as they could save you money, hassle and potentially a big financial mess.

Below are some examples of additional coverages you may want to consider:

  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): PIP coverage is automatically included on your Auto Insurance policy unless you reject it in writing. Auto Insurance companies must offer you $2,500 in PIP coverage, but you can either decline the coverage altogether or choose to buy more. PIP coverage helps pay for injuries to you or passengers involved in an auto accident, regardless of who is at fault.
  • Collision Coverage*: This coverage helps pay for damages in the event of an accident involving other vehicles. Though the cost to fix vehicle damage varies greatly following an accident, you can pretty much count on most car repairs to be fairly costly. With national average repair costs of nearly $3,000, you risk paying those repair costs out of your own pocket if you do not have Collision coverage.
  • Comprehensive Coverage*: If there are damages to your car caused by something other than a car collision, Comprehensive coverage will help cover these types of incidents. This can include compensation for damage done to car by natural disasters, hail, tornadoes, vandalism and more.
  • Underinsured/Uninsured Motorist Coverage: This coverage helps pay for damages caused by underinsured or uninsured drivers. Even though Texas uses TexasSure to help catch uninsured motorists, you may be surprised to know that about 15% of Texas drivers are uninsured. That means that one out of every five drivers are on the road without Car Insurance. It’s against the law, but that won’t matter if one of them hits you and causes damage and injury to you and others in your vehicle. Without this additional type of coverage, you will still be required to pay for those damages, even if the accident is not your fault.
  • Higher Bodily Injury Limits: The minimum Bodily Injury limits may not be nearly enough to cover injuries to others in the event that you cause an accident in which you’re at fault. Bodily Injury claims can add up to very significant amounts depending on the extent of the injuries caused, and that minimum amount may be quickly exhausted. AIS recommends that you consider additional BI coverage to protect yourself from potentially substantial costs.
  • Higher Property Damage Limits: Although you are only required to carry a minimum of $25,000 in Property Damage, you should consider increasing that amount. From vehicle repair costs to the cost of damaging property such as light poles, fences and even buildings, you could rapidly exhaust the minimum amount and find yourself having to pay additional property damage costs yourself.

*Although Collision coverage and Comprehensive coverage are not required by law, they may be required in your car loan or lease contract with the lender.

While these additional types and levels of coverage are not required by the state of Texas, you may want to consider them for your policy. One of the best ways to determine your specific Auto Insurance coverage needs is to consult an Insurance Specialist at AIS.
